The iBlog10 Experience (Part 1)

It was like ten months in the making. And in fact, they just celebrated their ten years in this venture. And when they formally announced the event, I was one of the people who were more excited. Yes, frankly speaking, I was really looking forward for the 10^th Philippine Blogging Summit.

I wasted no time in deciding (since being too patient is not really part of my personality at all): I immediately signed my name there, and bet my money that I could not really afford to miss this big thing in blogging (nah, just kidding on the latter part).

It was Friday morning, around 8:20 in the morning when I finally entered the hallway of the Malcolm Hall inside the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines in Quezon City. It was quite a lovely sight on a bright, sunny morning; and Kid Rock’s “Celebrate” is playing on my mind (the 2012 track apparently went on to become the main theme of the WWE’s 30^th edition of WrestleMania). 

Then, I hurriedly went to the registration booth and wasted no chance to pick my very viewing spot (you know where it means).

The first people who talked on the iBlog10 were Mrs. Noem Lardizabal-Dado and Mr. Carlo Ople, for the topic “Bloggers as New Media personalities.” 

Though Dado, known as the @momblogger on Twitter, spoke best on her advocacy-in relation to the talk which includes EpalWatch, I learned a lot more on Ople’s part (and I’m not saying this just because I was part of the guy’s social network for I think about four years). What the hell I am talking about? See photo below.

Yes, if you want to be a damn good fella in the new media, just simply follow his five steps.

And… oh, it was the only time I met Mr. Ople in the flesh.

After the first hiatus, Jinoe Gavan, Azrael Coladilla and When In Manila’s main man Vince Golangco spoke in regards to Bulding Communities Through Blogging.

They all have respective yet similar points in the topic though. I’m gonna let my captured photographs do the talking this time around.

Though Golango’s “10 Steps To Create A Writing Portfolio” really caught my attention. Yes, and why wouldn’t anyone since we used to read those Thought Catalog-like posts anyway (i.e. top 10 things about blah blah blah).

What are those? Simple: #1 – Start Writing; and #s 2 to 10 – Keep on Writing. I think Vince said it best with that hilarious meme on the wide screen.

During the lunch break, I managed to bump with the booth of Vibal Foundation, and found out they were now offering services of creating e-books for the indie authors like yours truly. Also, during the two-day event, they had three promos. 

I has yet to listen to their presentation later that day though.

After their afternoon talk, several personalities such as Grace Bondad Nicolas, Jonel Uy, Boris Joaquin, and Fitz Villafuerte on F199 Jobs spoke about the side of Bloggers as the Digital Marketers. Afterwards, it was Joeff Solas,  Mannix Pabalan, and Brad Geiser’s turn to hit the stage and tackle the Bloggers as Part of Internet Marketing and Advertising.

But I admire Geiser’s style in delivering his talk though.

Since then, Tonyo Cruz and Francis Acero spoke about what are the capabilities of bloggers in shaping your own personal opinion and national advocacies.

And before the day ends, I also managed to drop by at the GMA News’ booth, where they are raffling several prizes, including a Samsung Galaxy Note. However, I managed to score an 8GB USB. Not bad!

Now, after an ‘information overload’ Friday, what are my other thoughts for iBlog10? I can tell you a few of them, like:

·         Don’t write just to be the most-Googled site. Who cares if you’re the most searchable site if everything you have there is just a mere piece of crap? SEO can really help you, but there’s more to life than digging most of your blogging life on that aspect; as more people from the blogosphere will slap you with these truthful words: “Content is still the king.”

·         Content still matters the most. This is where people will recognize you; and at the same time, the marketers are really after. No one of them will give a shit on your catchy name or design. You know what I’m saying? MESSAGE, dudes: And another thing:

·         Being viral won’t make you famous. It’s just a number. Popularity is just a title; and a real talk tip for you: both items (viral and popular) are just temporary. It won’t last a long run. It’s like asking: “who cares if you got a thousand page views when in fact all you have right there is nothing but (I’ll say it again) a mere piece of crap?”

Well, the only exception to this rule: that’s if you are making money through this venture (I mean, for real). Otherwise, better yet…

·         Go for good. I mean, create a good post – something that people is really worth reading at all; and something that will really sell in a long run.

·         “Stand up for something of your own.” At the modern times, your blog is your own voice. This is where you are stating and entitling your own opinion the most. This is also the venue where your principle in life lies. So, you better know your worth.

·         Find the right guys. Especially if we’re talking about creating or joining a community group in the online shores.

You just can’t blend with the other type of people just to say “Hey, I’m part of this (name) group!” (believe me, I tried). And I’m pretty much sure there will be a lot of peeps out there who has the same interests and niches like you do.

·         Take care. It actually sounds sweet, right? But I am more pertaining to your blog – the brand that you own right now. You should also take care of your readers. And also…

·         Show up. This applies for bloggers who used to attend the events but did not managed to put up a single blog post about them.

You know, you have been trusted to write something about them in return, regardless of whatever time period it might took you. I’ll quote an article I read from a blog entitled Knowing Ropes: “If invited by a PR in an event, they are hopeful that you’ll blog about them. If you won’t, then better not go.”

·         Stay consistent. Just keep on creating a post. Don’t settle for viral alone. Write something that your readers can relate.

Pero Ang Init Pa Rin!

Ang init!

Naku, may bago pa ba sa ganito?

Natural na mainit sa Pilipinas. Aba, siyempre, dahil ang lugar natin ay tinuturing rin na isang ‘tropical country.’

Pero, ang init pa rin! Oo, para namang hindi naman tayo nasanay sa ganito. Summer eh!

Pero, ang init pa rin! Lalo na’t naglalaro na sa mahigit 35 hanggang 37 ang temperatura ng kalakhang Maynila. Pero kung yan lang ay nirereklamo mo, what more pa sa mga lugar tulad ng Tuguegarao City sa Cagayan. Kung maalala ang kasaysayan, ditto naitala ang pinakamainit sa buong Pilipinas na nasa mahigit 42 degrees Celsius.

Pero ang init pa rin! Sa panahon ngayon  na marami ang mga informal settler na gawa sa barung-barong angkanilang mga bahay (pero tama ba na sisihin sila ditto?), oo… ang init talaga.

Sa panahon rin ngayon na nagtatayuan ang mga malalaking gusali, oo, ang init talaga. Lalo na’t matindi rin ang epekto ng semento pagdating sa mga panahon tulad nito. As in parang nakakulong lang.

Pero ang init pa rin! Sa panahon na nagbabago ang klima dala ng ating sariling katarantaduhan sa pagpapabaya sa kalikasan (na dumarating sa punto na ni ultimo ang pagtatapon ng basura, hindi nga natin magawa ng maayos eh), oo ang init talaga. Kung gaano katindi ang tirik ng araw sa kalupaan, ganun din naman katindi ang buhos ng ulan.

Pero ang init pa rin! Walang bago kung sakit ang usapan. Possible pa ring makaranas ng sore eyes, sun burn, bungang araw at iba pang hindi magandang karamdaman. Yun nga lang siguro, dahil mas matindi nga naman ang epekto ng mas tirik na sun rays sa atin, mas madali tayong makakuha ng sakit, o mas malala: possible pang skin cancer pag natsambahan (wag naman sana).

Pero… ang init pa rin! Lagi naman tayong nagrereklamo eh. Tignan mo, noong panahon na nuknukan naman ng lamig ang Metro Manila, pustahan tayo, na lima sa bawat sampung kataong nakaranas ng mahigit 15.8 at 16.9 degrees na temperatura aynagrereklamo. So, may bago pa ba sa ganito?

Paki-explain ha? Oo, bilang tao ay deserving tayo ng isang ‘acceptable’ explanation (at walang kinalaman ditto ang pelikulang “Starting Over Again” dahil hindi ko naman siya pianood sa sinehan) kung bakit tayo nagrereklamo sa kabila ng papalit-palit na panahon.

Siyempre, una, dahil posibleng nagkakasakit tayo. Hindi makasabay sa agos ng buhay ang katawan natin. Maari bang sabihing walang pakisama ang templo mo, o walang pakisama ang direksyon ng hangin?

At pangalawa, siklo na ito eh. Lalo na’t summer na. Wohoo! Sarap naming tumambay sa beach nito.

Pero, natural naman na umiinit ang panahon sa ganitong lugar eh. At sa panahon ngayon na nagbabago ang klima, mas nagiging natural ito. Kaya wala na tayong magagawa dun kundi gawin ang dapat gawin, tuald ng pagpapaigitng ng resistensya mo sa ganitong panahon – at hindi mo maiibsan ang init na yan sa isang paraan ng ‘parausan’ na ung tawagin ay sex.

Oo, hindi kalandian ang sagot dyan, tol. Iligo mo na lang yan, kaya umiinit lalo ulo mo eh.

Monolith Fun Run 2014 Launch at Cowboy Grill Quezon Ave. Branch

Here’s something I spotted over last month. Well, that was the evening of March 12 to be exact.

Monolith has launched their fun run for a cause. It will happen at April 27, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia grounds in Pasay City.

The construction and development firm will also aim to raise funds for the benefit of the survivors of typhoon Yolanda (international name: Haiyan). To do so, you can register at the respective race categories posted.

Yours truly was lucky to be part of the pool of photographers and bloggers (alongside friend SailorStarCatcher who happens to be a runner also) along with their staff when they formally conferred at that Cowboy Grill branch in Quezon Avenue-Delta area in Quezon City.

Meanwhile, as Monolith presented their event to us, so was the Cowboy Grill. I mean, on what their business is really about. Plus, their dinner seemed to suit my stomach more (takaw mode lang eh. Hahaha!)

But anyway, maybe if there’s a place to check out if we’re talking about the less noisier side of nightlife here, I think I found a potential choice! Anyway, since it’s summer, maybe I should take a breather here soon!

Fitting Tribute

For the last two weeks, we saw this: two members of the '96 NBA draft class went on to get honored on their respective teams.

First, here's "the answer." Yes, Allen Iverson was a hell of scorer during his days with the Philadelphia 76ers. The 6-footer point guard managed to make big time plays in the association.

He even dunked the ball more than those guards who stand an inch (or two or even three) taller more than him.

I used to remember playing those earlier NBA Live series (I think from 2001 to 2005), when I handled the 76ers crew and let this guy score from outside and in.

But heck, the way he scored more points, the more hype he received during his era. So high, it allowed Kobe Bryant to work under the radar en route to his own version of stardom.

This one-time MVP has several on-court issues, specifically during his time with Coach Larry Brown. Too bad, I hoped he will win a title after his finals debut in 2001.

But never the less, aside from Jason Williams, here's a pro baller who can screw everyone and send them to school with his crossover skills. Yes, even Michael Jordan was once his shake-and-bake victim.

Here's the video showing his retirement ceremony slated a month ago in a game against the visiting Washington Wizards at the Wells Fargo Center situated in the city of brotherly love.

Say, don't you just love the boat the company has given to him? Damn nice.

Now, moving on, here's another franchise player in the East (like Iverson to his 76ers playing days) by the name of the Lithuianian Zydrunas Ilgauskas.

The 7-foot-3 center was the 20th overall pick in the same year as Iverson, Bryant and Marcus Camby’s. In such case, despite his white skin, I can tell he was the “dark horse” of them all.

Z went on to become the top franchise guy in the Cavaliers' history. Like AI, he had several achievements. The difference though is that his foot injuries nearly killed his NBA career. He had a huge comeback in the early 2000s and from there, Z stood tall despite the emergence of another giant named Yao Ming.

Plus, being a sidekick to the young highflying LeBron James, the Cavs made a huge turnaround from being a total mediocre to a perennial contender. But from a playoff regular, they were also tagged as chokers either.

In spite of everything,  Z has been steady on being under the radar. He retired on 2011 after being a teammate to his friend LeBron in Miami Heat when they both failed to anchor Wade's team to a promised championship.

But heck, I also used the Cavs team to any NBA Live games before; and I can even let this guy can nail a trey (yes, considering that this guy's part of those European-type of centers and forwards whose shooting from inside and out despite their height).

Whoa. That was a long run for both players. Much respect to them.

THE PRE-TAKE: WRESTLEMANIA XXX (PART 2)

Now, let’s move to the four main event cards of Wrestlemania XXX: first, it’s John Cena versus Bray Wyatt in a singles match. Yet, a singles match which seems to defy prophecies, generations, and… yes, the word ‘legacy’ itself.

Wyatt has been a superb monster during his WWE NXT days. Before he left the developing league to enter the main one, his crew Wyatt Family was the three-man dominating cultist-like crew packed with total weapons of destruction. And I’m sure when they debuted for the WWE last year, you once hated them, especially the patriarch him self – for bringing nothing but wreak havoc on several superstars.

And now, they menaced on the big one who seems to be the most-popular star in WWE for the last decade (yes, during the post-Attitude Era). Talk about crushing heroes in the eyes of those kids, eh?

And come to think that John Cena has been on a downside spiral for almost the previous three years, eh? First he lost to the Miz in 2011; then to the Rock in 2012; before his revenge worked out in 2013 to spill the jinx out of him. However, the last time he was at the grandest stage (which was by the way, situated at the Metlife Stadium in East Rutherford), turned out to be a stellar one on his part as he grabbed the WWE Championship from Dwayne Johnson.

But now, it’s not for the title – it’s for the legacy. Will John Cena’s era prevail anew, or a new one emerges in Bray Wyatt. Well, let’s hope though this will turn out to be real messy for either one of them.

Moving on, it’s the Phenom clashing with the Beast. Yes, the Undertaker will roll on his 22^nd Wrestlemania Battle once again; with this time around, a certain Brock Lesnar will be his rival.

As Lesnar’s advocate Paul Heyman expressed his disbelief for the former’s non-inclusion to join the WWE World Heavyweight Title clash at Wrestlemania, the latter said he was offered by the Authority to post an ‘open challenge’ for the evening.

And much to anyone’s surprise though, the Deadman rose from out of nowhere to take that ‘challenge.’ Mark Callaway has been on a roll since 1992. He has beaten almost everyone: legends and superstars alike.

And even Mr. Wrestlemania himself.

In 2012 at Miami, the WWE universe witnessed the most harrowing entrance of a WWE player and it turns out to be an instant 50-minute classic: the END of an ERA clash against Hunter, with Shawn Michaels as the guest referee in the match.

In 2013, The Undertaker avenged the total humiliation made by CM Punk against him and his late manager Paul Bearer (whom, by the way, will be entering the Hall of Fame this year).

And now, a beast incarnate will try to halt the Undertaker’s winning run. And indeed, he is capable of doing such, considering he broke Shawn Michael’s arm as well as Triple H’s for twice. Lesnar also sent Chairman Vince McMahon to a hip replacement surgery when he threw a thunderous F5 on him. Plus recently, he threw Mark Henry out of his way and even broke his shoulder.

This guy can really defy death and broke his legacy in terms of abilities. The question though: is that enough to put the game in his favor? I’ll say the Undertaker would still prevail in this one.

Now, for the championship wars: it’s Daniel Bryan versus Triple H. The Hunter appeared to have his era diminished after losing to Undertake in 2012, but vowed revenged and eventually emerged victorious in 2013 when he send Brock Lesnar to his toes on a no-holds barred battle in 2013.

Now, he’s back in the squared circle once again, with another reason: put the YES MOVEMENT into a stop. And this means staging a war against Daniel Bryan. Prior to their much-awaited clash, the Hunter staged a set-up to strip the championship title from Bryan on Summerslam. He then awarded it to the Money in the Bank winner Randy Orton.

And despite Daniel Bryan’s even skyrocketing popularity, the Authority was still at helm to deprive him any chances to win the most coveted WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Kane, once his former tag-team partner cost him the chance to steal the belt against Orton in Elimination Chamber. Bryan also berated Triple H’s crew from also depriving him a chance to participate at the Royal Rumble.

Well, for now, it seemed like Daniel Bryan finally got what he wish for; when he staged an OCCUPY RAW movement at one point during the WWE’s flagship program. But he also suffered a massive consequence a week after though.

The winner of the match will take a step from their ladder to the biggest battle of Wrestlemania XXX – the title match itself.

At first, it was supposedly a Randy Orton-Batista clash, since Orton has been holding on to the title after defeating John Cena for twice (First, at TLC [Dec. 2013]; and second, at the Royal Rumble [Jan. 2014]). We can’t count the Elimination Chamber though even if the Cenation leader was part of that 6-man event title battle, since it was Bryan whom came even close for that ‘big one.’

However, as for that “best for business,” motto, which Triple H and Stephanie McMahon always used to say, it turned out to be a triple-threat.

By the way, Batista won the Royal Rumble in a not-so-convincing fashion. Maybe, if Roman Reigns managed to hold his ground.

Now, should that be another exciting. Well, please do so? ‘Cause this ‘business talk’ is getting boring little by little. And honestly speaking, I don’t care who wins for the title.

Now… that’s my pre-Werstlemania post looks boring either. Adding insult to injury is that one local channel isn’t airing WWE shows anymore, leaving questions from us on where should we resort every now and then? Aside from a cable channel, though.

But if you asked me what should be the match of the night, I’ll pick three potentials. Either which of them will fall on that namesake.

-          SHIELD versus KANE + NEW AGE OUTLAWS

-          UNDERTAKER versus BROCK LESNAR

-          30-MAN ANDRE THE GIANT MEMORIAL BATTLE ROYAL

Yeah, where am I should now look for to watch Wrestlemania XXX?  Sucks to be me.

Why Should You Attend iBlog10?

Last year, I attended their ninth seminar in over the same span of years. Actually, it’s the second day of the event.

I can still remember that one female student who tipped me for the conference (at that time, she was approaching me to be one of her group’s respondents in their thesis).

And after all of the timing, I managed to take home a gift pack (which was then I gave to my ex-girlfriend as a gift on our half-anniversary) and a T-shirt which I also won at their raffle.

But aside from the prizes, there are more things out there which are more worth to cherish – and that is what I called “learning.”

Yes, you may thought I am the poor man’s Albert Einstein in the blogosphere after criticizing issues and surveying possible angles prior to making judgments, something that people may told me “ang dami mong alam” or whatsoever similar. But as long as you live, you still learn. You still commit mistakes. You still know some other ways more than what you first thought of.

And frankly speaking, iBlog9 fed my mind about blogging and even more beyond my limits. It’s not just about praising products or services for monetary sakes, nor about the freedom to throw a bunch of brouhahas. Believe me, folks.

Some people can attest to that after meeting them last June 1, 2013 (it was a Saturday, by the way). At least, I did not go home being a total ‘anti-social’ dude (what’s my other purpose in the first place aside from gathering knowledge anyway?).

I have been doing this venture for like five years straight (unless if I hadn’t stopped from doing so during the latter part of my high school days, I should have counted that as ‘nine’), and despite the time frame, even if people looked up to me as their ‘idol,’ I will not deny the fact to myself that I am still a neophyte in this industry.

And being a total beginner in learning stuff, I am recommending the 10^th Philippine Blogging Summit for all of you bloggers, especially if you are on the same roll like I do.

This year, as I checked out their schedule posted on the website iblogph.org, this year’s summit is all about the blog as a platform for new media, as well as building communities, shaping public opinion on current events and sports, as well as a new part of the marketing umbrella, regulations and history of the internet in the country and more (something that I’m afraid to tell you I will not dare to spoil your asses. Just please do attend if you want to).

Now if that doesn’t convince you enough, then checked out other bloggers’ insights on what they thought of iBlog10 and the previous iBlog conferences.

Otherwise, I may be quiet and sitting out there on the back along with accompany of mine, in case you recognized me here’s the tip: like my profile photo in this site (as well as on Definitely Filipino, the site where I also made my contributions), I always wear this aviator sunglasses. Just better be good when you approach me, or else expect me landing a punch on your nose (just kidding).

THE PRE-TAKE: WRESTLEMANIA XXX (PART 1)

What you’re gonna do if Wrestlemania runs wild on you, brother?

Well, it’s barely half-week to go before Wrestlemania 30 rolls along at the Superdome in the Big Easy. Now, let’s just hope that the professional wrestling’s grandest annual event will not be another bust nor bullshit on our part as fans and spectators.

Well, I can really say I am still a spectator, since I only managed to get a hold of witnessing this thing since 2012 (though when I was a kid, I do watch several wrestling programs such as the precursor WWF).

First, the 59-year older Hulk Hogan returns to the sports entertainment world as the host for the evening.

But, moreover, let’s see what we can say about the upcoming cards in the Wrestlemania XXX.

Kicking off the evening will be a fatal-four way clash for the Tag Team Championship. Just barely a few weeks (I think more than a month) after the Samoan-brother tandem known as the Usos took the title away from the reemerging New Age Outlaws, here they ago in the biggest night of their wrestling lives: Jimmy and Jey Uso will battle three other two-man crews whom are also potential title dethroners. Namely: Ryback and Curtis Axel; the Real Americans (Jack Swagger and Cesaro); and the Los Matadores (Diego and Fernando).

The Real Americans can be really a powerhouse, though I think Cesaro (who dropped the first name Antonio from his stage name) is more destructive than his partner.

Meanwhile, Ryback and Curtis Axel were not the much-favored to win the title in my word. Yes, they look like a demolition crew, but still ain’t enough to dethrone the Samoan brothers.

So, the Director of Operations teamed up with Road Dogg and Billy Gunn to throw a punishment anew to Roman Reigns, Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins, eh? They clashed a few episodes back in both RAW and SMACKDOWN lately, where it seems the Hound of Justice is now imposing their will and power against one top member of the Authority.

But nah, it may be exciting. But still, I would rather see the Wyatts as their opponent instead. Seriously, it was one heck of a match. Plus Roman Reigns is living on his own super potential (it can’t be denied), though the stability of their partnership with Ambrose and Reigns is still have to watch considering these guys have their own sets of misunderstandings as well.

How about the Vickie Guerrero Divas’ Championship Invitational? It seems like similar to the Battle Royal’s objective – every man for himself. Well, let me rectify that for you, guys – every diva for herself. So AJ Lee will be on her own when she battles the other 13 female WWE wrestlers.

Next in line will be the 30-man battle royal in memory of Andre the Giant. Yes, and ironically it’s his rival Hulk Hogan whom announced this huge card; where stars and even champions will clash with fellow players and another in the over-the-top-rope battle to win that memorial trophy.

Honestly speaking, I can’t tell who will win this. And I can’t even enumerate them all since this post is getting longer if I do so. But certainly this should be another exciting war field to take on.

WWE Wrestlemania XXX will be airing live from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana on Sunday, April 6, 2014 at 7 PM Eastern Time / 4PM Pacific Time.

In the Philippines, it will be 7AM live; though Fox Channel Philippines has the exclusive rights to broadcast the four-hour extravaganza. The show starts by 9:50 PM.
