Alaala Ng Trese

Let’s shy away from the three big networks here in the Philippines. Pag-usapan naman natin… ito.

Sa panahon na sinusulat ko ang blog post na ito, ay kasalukuyan kong pinapanood ang Retro TV, isang programa ng IBC-13 na umere muli nitong nakaraang Sabado ng gabi, (dakong alas-10 yun, to be exact).

Sa panasamantalang pagtangkilik sa programang yun, na ang nag-host pala by the way ay si Drew Arellano, isang episode ng TODAS at Sic O Clock News ang umere.

Bigla kong naalala, at lingid ito sa kaalaman ng maraming tao sa panahon ngayon maliban na lamang kung matalas pang memorya mo noong dekada ’80, maliban pa sa mga masasalimuot na alaala ng Martial Law—na isa sa mga tanyag na istasyon ng telebisyon noon ay ang channel 13, o trese, o kung masyado kang mahilig sa teknikalidad at terminolohiya, ang Intercontinental Broadcasting Corporation.

Pagmamay-ari ito ng isang Roberto Benedicto, isang media chain owner din, noong kapanahunan ng rehimeng Marcos. Yun nga lang, pagkatapos ng 21 taon ng kanyang panunugkulan, ay isa rin ito sa mga na-sequester. Meaning, napasakamay ito ng pamahalaan mula pa noong 1986, at hanggang ngayon.

Pero sa dekada ’90 naman ay umuusbong pa rin naman ang trese, kasama ang RPN 9, ABS-CBN 2, GMA-7 at ang bago lang din nun na ABC-5. Naging tahanan nga sila ng mga laro ng Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) ng mahigit isang dekada. Naging isang premier sports channel na maituturing dahil isa rin sila sa mga nagcover ng mga laro ng boxing at ultimo ang WWE dati na kilala pa bilang WWF o World Wrestling Federation  (well, yung huling halimbawa ay ayon sa aking erpat; pero correct me if mali ako dyan).

At ang dalawang programa na pinanood ko ay kabilang lamang sa ilang bantog na sitcom nun sa kasaysayan ng Philippine Television, at ilan din sa listahan ng mga astig na prorama nun ng IBC.

At kahit noon pa man, isa sa mga trademark ng IBC 13 ay ang pagpapalabas ng mga programa na naglalarawan sa kultura natin. Oo, ang kultura ng Pilipino. Ang Tipong Pinoy (na by the way ay pinapalabas din pala sa Knowledge Channel, ang educational channel ng Sky Cable) ay isa sa mga programa ng 13 mula pa noong 90s. Yun nga lang, hindi ko maalala ang pangalan ng babaeng host nito at ang pagkakaalam ko ay ang kasama niya dun ay ang musikero at anak ng batikang news anchor Mel Tiangco na si Wency Cornejo.

Sa ngayon, ineere pa rin yata nila yun, kasama ang 2010-ish produced na CoolTura, at ang A Taste of Heritage.

Ngunit kung ano ang kasikatan noon ng trese, ganun naman ang kabaliktaran sa nakalipas na mga taon.

Maaring naging patok ang IBC 13 dala ng kanilang blocktimer agreement sa Vintage Sports at  PBA nun, pero tila ito rin ang naging ugat ng pagkabagsak nila. Ayon sa taong nakausap ko sa istasyon nun, (o sige, para maging lehitimo ito, propesor ko siya sa eskwelahan nung kolehiyo aako and at the sametime, isa siya sa mga pinakamataas na tao sa channel na iyun), ay hindi sila nabayaran ng liga at naging ugat ito ng kanilang pagkalugi.

Hindi naman siguro sila tuluyang bumagsak. Pero hindi na rin sila kasi basta-basta makasabay sa ibang channel nun, particular sa dos at siyete nun na dalawang higante sa industriya. Kahit sa kabila pa ito ng katotohanan na nagiging blocktimer channel sila sa iba’t ibang mga production outfits sa bansa tulad ng Viva.

Sa panahon na naging estudyante niya ako, naging OJT ako sa istasyon nila. At kitang-kita dun ang ebidensya nun na napaglumaan na ng panahon ang mga pasilidad nila. Naging tila isang bodega na lamang ang isang dako ng studio nila sa dami ng kagamitan, sira man o hindi. At halata sa set-up nito ang edad. Ngunit sa kabila naman nun ay kaya pa rin nila makagawa ng programa tulad na lamang ng Extra Expres, kung saan ay ang kakalse ko nun sa Mass Comm ay naging segment host nila.

At sa panahon na rin na yun ay naging extra nila ako sa isang segment ng programang pinagtatrabahuan namin. Minsan din ay naging assistant cameraman ako para sa isang report ukol sa posibleng privatization ng IBC-13, bagay na wala na akong balita kung natuloy ba o ano na.

Apat na taon na ang nakalipas, at may pagmamay-ari na ang Channel 9 na kahanay nila sa Broadcast City. Basta, ang pagkakaalam ko ay matapos ang dalawang taon na nakipag-partner sila sa Channel 5 para maging AKTV ang 13 mula 5-11 pm kada gabi, ay naging blocktimer sa kanila ang ATC or Asian Television Content, at naging coverer sila ng ONE FC (One Fighting Championship) kahit sa sandaling panahon.

At mukhang nag-eere sila ulit ng mga orihinal na programa nila tulad ng mga binanggit ko sa mga naunang bahagi ng post na ito.

Sayang nga lang at hindi ko napansin kagad ang pagkakataon nun na naghahanap sila ng mga news writer. Pero ayos lang, ganun talaga ang buhay. At least, rejuvenated na nga ang peg ng news studio nila eh. Bagamat mas trip ko pa rin ang delivery style ng anchor ng Express Balita nun.

Well, at least, may mapapanood pa rin ako. Yun ang bottom line d’yan.

Lookback: Batch 2011

It’s been three years since this episode aired on Philippine television; and of course, yours truly, was one of those million (should I say) college graduates from batch 2011.

And since it’s Labor Day, and by coincidence... a Thursday (or should I say... #ThrowbackThursday), let’s take a trip back to 2011 and review this episode once again.

Say, it’s not just the same old format the show that I missed the most. It’s just I realized that… hey, time flies really fast, huh? It’s like I remembered watching this episode during the last and numbered days of my student life, was 20 years old way back then, and was totally inactive on the blogosphere yet.

It’s only today when I managed to pull this stuff at all; ‘cause I feel that even if it’s already 2014, people of younger generations, specifically the fresh graduates and even those a bit elders, are still struggling to lure a working opportunity of their own.

And even yours truly experienced them all, since it’s only late 2012 when I managed to be employed for the first time in my existence.

At the moment, I can say the search for another job was already over; since I finally managed to get over the hump by acing that final interview blues recently (so I’ll say “congratulations to myself, hehehe!).

But anyway, specifically for the “struggling ones” out there, I hope this episode from Aksyon TV’s defunct socio-cultural talk show Tayuan Mo! At Panindigan might help you to be aware of what the employment-seeking situation in the country was all about. Yes, even ‘a bit.’

Throwback: 2008 NBA All-Star Game

It’s been five years since I first wrote in this site of mine a piece of something related to the NBA All-Star event, and it’s been a year since the last time I have done so. But anyway, let me allow you to take a trip back to the memory lane; to the setting where I haven’t even got engaged into this kind of venture.

Before we hit the Big Easy again, here’s a piece of some throwback chunks during the All-Star Game itself in 2008. I used to remember a busy Monday for me in Mendiola but still managed to catch everything up on the internet (aside from an audio league pass and player cam feature from my NBA.com account then), and managed to replay this on both YouTube and TV coverage.

The first five field goals made by the Eastern All Stars are all dunks.

Kobe Bryant did played for the All-Star game, but only for about 3 minutes. He did not return to the action after being substituted. If you wondered why, well, blame it to the league policy. He revealed the had a torn ligament in his right pinky finger just a few days before the showcase itself.

It was then Jason Kidd’s last All-Star game wearing an East uniform. Well, he was supposed to be in Dallas that time, but the trade was put on hold then anyway.

Yao finally played his All-Star again after a year of absence depite being elected by who else but most of the city’s and his race’s fans (ain’t a bad thing anyway).

The East features 3 of the 5 big-time ballers of the draft class of 03. Do I need to name them? (By the way, David West belonged to the same year when Melo, Wade, LeBron and Bosh entered the NBA)

Boston and Detroit was the perennial powerhouse in the eastern conference as they had 3 players (including replacements and injured) each.

When the West attempted to rally, the replacement for Caron Butler who’s by the name of Ray Allen came to the rescue. By the way, he should’ve got the All-Star MVP award instead of James, if we’re talking about clutch scoring here (yes, seriously, he topscored for all players with 28 and Bron was just next to him with 27, but I’m not surprised ‘coz LBJ got the more complete package to bag the individual trophy anyway).

So many people deserved to win that MVP by the way. What if the West won? I got two picks: Brandon Roy and who else but the then-hometown little hero itself Chris Paul.

But aside from James and Allen, who should’ve won the All-Star MVP for the East? Nah, it’s only just between King James and Jesus Shuttlesworth.

But on the sidelights, does Dwight Howard really won the award? Maybe, because on the theatrics. It’s always amusing to jump with that superman cape though the downside is when you look on the super-ultra-mega-ultimate... err, phantom (rather) slow mode, it seems he just throw the rock in the hope without some kind of rim-rattling motion (not even a glimpse of a finger touched that rim).

But jumping a dunk from 12 feet (the real one) is kinda impressive. Actually, even Gerald Green and Jamario Moon can even top Howard’s (sorry, Gay).

On the shoot-out from downtown, it seems it was only the time when Jason Kapono’s career was in the top spotlight. I wonder what happened o him afterwards. Say, he hardly earned that title anyway. Now only if Daniel Gibson’s rims cooperated.

Well, seriously I have nothing to say about the other events since I never managed to watch them on my neighbor’s TV.

Just except for the rising stars challenge, where a sophie by the name of then-LeBron’s teammate Daniel Gibson took home the game MVP award for posting 12 3-point shots on his way to 36 points – a team-high.

Damn sakes. Those, aside from 2007 playoffs, seemed to have the best in his NBA career.

Fast forward to 2014. After 6 years, the league stages the mid-season extravaganza here at New Orleans yet again. This time around though, we had many youngsters in both squads. And sadly, most of those younger peeps we saw in that ’08 event seem nowhere to be found. Awww.

Anyway, I’ll stay glued on this one this time around.
